Sharon Asquith

Sharon’s passion for dance began at the age of 5 when she was taken to her first Latin American & Ballroom class and was instantly hooked.

Within a few years she was dancing competitively and performing with a formation team. As her dancing developed, she progressed through the I.D.T.A. and soon gained her Teachers’ Certificate.

Taking a break from dancing to concentrate on her family, Sharon soon felt the need to dance again, and, after taking her daughter to join a local theatre school, she couldn’t help but notice that they had an adult dance troop. Naturally, she was powerless to resist and spent the next 10 years performing in regional theatres, sometimes sharing the stage with her daughter.

One night, she went along to a local salsa venue. Seeing everyone dancing together was fabulous. The fact that you didn’t even need to take a partner along was even better. As partner dancing was in her blood, she knew that she had finally found a permanent home for her talent and her passion.

Sharon took her UKA Teachers’ qualification in 2004 and started teaching for a local salsa club. In 2008, she was persuaded to teach a few salsa lessons at a local gym. The response was overwhelming, and although starting her own club was something she hadn’t intended to do, she decided to give it a go. Sharon’s unique blend of high standards and fun lessons meant that the class went from strength to strength, and it quickly out-grew the small studio. Bigger and better premises were found, more teachers were enlisted to bring Sharon’s teaching principles to a growing and enthusiastic range of levels, and SalsaShine was born. Since then, Sharon has been teaching at all levels and has recently taken her UKA qualifications in Kizomba.

Kevin Knights

With no previous dance background, Kevin first experienced salsa at 'Havana' in St Albans. He was completely absorbed by the exciting and welcoming atmosphere & despite having two left feet he was hooked & just had to learn more. It took him several years to become proficient, although Kevin feels there is always more to learn and even more to remember.
Salsa completely changed his life, once able to dance it totally dominated his social life, dancing intensively, eventually every night of the week. He often travelled to clubs with his own harem of salsa angels!

He qualified as a UKA teacher in 2007. Regularly teaching at venues across Essex. Kevin has now been dancing salsa for over 20 years & says that these days he sometimes feel like he is the old man of salsa, having been involved with, and present at many major London Salsa events. Originally in the days before the Internet he had to read London Spanish newspapers to find out when and where any salsa events would be on.

Kevin is now married to Yvonne whom he met on the grand staircase at the 'café de Paris', London, at the Christmas Salsa Ball in 1999. They were introduced by a mutual friend who said "My friend would like to dance with you!" The rest is history.

We are very happy to have Kevin & Yvonne as part of the team at SalsaShine.

Karen Patmore

Karen started dancing when she was so high - she's still only so high and she's still dancing! Having enjoyed latin and ballroom in earlier years, she took up salsa nine years ago and has remained passionate about it ever since. She has graduated from instructor's demonstrator and is now an instructor herself and thoroughly enjoys helping newcomers to find their feet - or at least giving them tips on how to avoid tripping over them. Karen still remembers how daunting her first few months of salsa were, and would say to any beginner, keep practising, keep smiling, never be afraid to ask for help and you will be dancing in no time.

Kate has been dancing since the age of 3. She took all her Tap, Ballet Modern and Jazz dance exams in I.S.T.D. and B.T.D.A. Then with her teaching qualifications under her belt went on to teach part time for 15 years, at her local dance school.

She has danced on the stage of Her Majesty Theatre in London, numerous times at the Cliffs Pavilion and loads of other stages across the southeast.

Kate has been salsa dancing for over 9 years. She loves teaching and with her enthusiastic, precise & clear instructions makes the steps much easier to pick up.

She says its very exciting to watch a complete beginner leave her lesson & start to put into practise all that they have learned from her on the dance floor.
